Yoga and Meditation

Although many people are not aware of it, the connection between yoga and meditation is quite yoga and meditationstrong. Whether you are looking to achieve better health, reduce stress, or increase your spiritual awareness, meditation can be a perfect complement to yoga -- it is even possible to achieve a state of meditation while practicing yoga poses.

Yoga itself is a form of meditation -- when you practice yoga poses, you are allowing your attention to turn inward, noticing the subtle energy that flows through your body. While some practitioners use yoga solely for strength training and increased physical flexibility, the physical benefits of yoga only represent one side of this highly beneficial practice. Yoga and meditation can be used together to heighten your sense of self-awareness, connect with divine energy, and build an optimal internal environment for personal growth.

When you look at the fundamentals of yoga and meditation, you will see that they are not terribly different. Both practices offer a wide array of mental, physical, and spiritual benefits. Yoga and meditation can both be effectively used to improve the connection between the physical world and the spiritual world. And both practices require you to develop the same skills.

First, when learning either yoga or how to meditate deeply, it is essential that you develop a sense of trust in your own inner wisdom. It is a common misconception that these practices can only be learned through the teaching and wisdom of an expert -- while learning the fundamentals from an experienced teacher can certainly be beneficial, your own inner wisdom will play a key role in understanding how to best benefit from these practices. Without trusting in yourself, it will be difficult to achieve optimal physical and spiritual benefits.

Second, both practices require a sense of discipline. We all have a myriad of obligations, stresses, and goals that are deeply rooted in the physical world, and these can easily distract you from the objectives you have set for your yoga and meditation practices. It is important to develop a sense of discipline when it comes to using these techniques. If you begin skipping meditation or yoga sessions, you will likely end up abandoning these practices altogether - robbing you of the profound benefits of meditation and yoga.

Finally, yoga and meditation both require a bit of patience. Although you can obtain substantial benefits from these practices, it can take a while to develop a sense of mastery. In the beginning, yoga and meditation for beginners can seem like a waste of time, particularly if you have never used them before, but you have to maintain the patience necessary to obtain their benefits. Just remember that the benefits will come - it may take days or even weeks, but they will come.

Because the mindset needed to practice yoga and meditation are largely the same, you can benefit from both of these practices with only a little effort. Over time, you will even be able to use these practices together - the meditative aspect of yoga makes it easy to realize substantial physical and mental benefits that will help you to improve nearly every aspect of your life.
